The sweet in sweet and sour comes from a can of cranberry sauce and a handful of raisins, cooked down into four cans of tomato sauce. Three pounds of meatballs go in raw and simmer for three hours.
Grate the onions rather than chopping them. Grated onion disappears into the meat and keeps it tender, where chopped onion stays in pieces and the meatballs break along them. Matzah meal and breadcrumbs both work.
Sauce
4 cans tomato sauce (15-16oz)
1 can cranberry sauce (15-16 oz)
16 oz water
Handful of raisins
1.50 tbsp lemon juice
Pinch salt
Pinch pepper
Meatballs
3 lbs ground beef (chicken/turkey works too)
1.50 cups matzah meal/breadcrumbs
1.50 tsp salt
¾ tsp pepper
3 onions- grated
3 eggs
1Mix all sauce ingredients together in a large put and set on medium low flame
2Combine all meatball ingredients together and shape into balls
3Add meatballs to sauce, lower flame to simmer, and let meatballs cook for 3 hours

Could I add cabbage to this. It sounds yummy
Absolutely! The original recipe that was passed down from my husband’s grandmother actually called for cabbage!
